Steffan Hewitt, the inventor of the award winning Polecam has recently returned from the Canadian Arctic, filming walrus with Arctic Bear Productions for National Geographic. If successful, the shots will be used in a feature film, due for cinema release in Spring 2006, titled ‘Call of the North’.

Adam Ravetch of Arctic Bear Productions first saw Polecam at the Wildscreen Show in Bristol 5 years ago and ever since has wanted an opportunity to use it. “I have worked in the Arctic since 1998 filming walrus and polar bears. The logistics of taking a crane up there are impossible. The Polecam seemed to be the answer to our problems.”

The battery power system chosen by Steffan to run the Polecam was supplied by PAG Ltd. A PAGlok battery connector was fitted to the Polecam. Four, high-capacity NMH100 SuperPack batteries were supplied to run the camera. The NMH100 SuperPack is a high-performance 13.2V 7.5Ah 100 watt-hour Ni-MH battery, ideal for extended run-time or high power consumption. The charger supplied to keep the batteries performing at their best was the 4-channel PAG AR124PLD.

“The key feature of the battery system for a shoot like this is reliability.” Steffan says “I have used PAG products for over 15 years as a cameraman and now a manufacturer of the Polecam system. Even up in the Arctic, their products did exactly what they said on the packet.”
